Abstract

In this paper, I plan to examine some definitions of substance that Descartes offers in his work. Looking to determine the types of entities that these definitions encompass and giving special attention to the case of human beings, I intend to shed light on aspects of Cartesian philosophy. Among them, the mean- ing of terms such as “substance”, “mode”, and “principal attribute”, which I believe are fundamental tools in understanding dualism and its consequences for the thesis of the body-soul substantial union.
