This essay constituted the foreword to Carlo Enzo’s Adamo dove sei?, published in 2002. I propose it again both to commemorate him and to foster a renewed interest for his La generazione di Gesù Cristo nel Vangelo secondo Matteo. This major work consists of six volumes and an Introduction, whose function is to contextualize the Gospel according to Matthew in the language of the Scripture. Entitled Il progetto di mondo e di uomo delle generazioni di Israele, the Introduction is the republication of Adamo dove sei? and puts forth a word by word exegesis of Genesis 1-4. The aim of this essay is to present Carlo Enzo’s approach to the Biblical text – an approach that entails a rediscovery of the Scripture, read iuxta propria principia – so as to intrigue young scholars to undertake this very path.
