Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine some uses of the concept of “immanence” within the contemporary Italian philosophical debate. Therefore, here I consider three problems widely discussed with reference to this concept. The first problem addresses the relations between the sphere of the human being and the world of animals and things. The second point concerns the use of immanence in a political and critical key. The third analyses some proposals for the renewal of metaphysics and ontology from an immanent perspective. My intention is to bring out some common aspects to these problems – namely, the critique of subjectivity, the ethical value of immanence, and the connection between immanence and life. By doing this I focus on the links between these theoretical perspectives and the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze, who is broadly considered as “the thinker of immanence” of the twentieth century. In the gap between the above-mentioned uses of immanence and Deleuze’s thought, I identify the theoretical space not only for a wider consideration of philosophy of immanence as a practical philosophy, but also for a critique of these interpretative choices
