The shamanizing anthropologist. Shamanism and the theoretical foundation of the anthropological discourse in Eduardo Viveiros de Castro
Abstract
The starting point of this paper is the statement of Eduardo Viveiros de Castro about Perspectivism and Shamanism in Amazonia: according to the author, both are practices of Immanence. We intend to separate and discuss the meaning and the theoretical context of this twofold assertion. Regarding the first term, Perspectivism, we question its pertinence as a practice of Immanence. Contrarily, it is at the intersection of Structuralism and the Deleuzian concept of Becoming that Shamanism helps us think the problem of Immanence. Lastly, we argue that Viveiros de Castro himself pretends to practice a sort of “shamanizing anthropology”: his discourse doesn’t aim to represent Alterity, but to make it experienceable.
