On Human Comedy: Opinion and Appearance in the Writings of Giammaria Ortes.
Abstract
Giammaria Ortes (1713-1790) is a multifaceted author, considered to
be among the figures who were relevant in the contest of Eighteenth-century
Italian culture. The aim of this contribution is to reconstruct the positions held
in his philosophical writings, especially with regard to the concepts of opinion
and appearance. Ortes, by analyzing the use of imagination and the distinction
of false and true, sets the basis for a broader discourse on human actions and
relations, dominated by poetry and fiction.
